Jakarta Multicultural School – Y5 PYP Exhibition

As we know in the final year of the PYP, students, carry out an extended, in-depth, collaborative project known as the PYP exhibition. JMS students worked collaboratively to conduct an in-depth inquiry into real life issues of water pollution and the importance of recycling under the unit Sharing the Planet – save the Earth as its the only planet with chocolates. Students collectively synthesised all of the essential elements of the PYP in ways that can be shared with the whole school community.

To go further with the Inquiry they visited the XS project which is a non-profit organization (Yayasan) that works to improve the lives of families living in Jakarta’s trash picker communities.

There they learnt that the XSProject receives donations of discarded materials such as billboards, banners and automobile upholstery. From this waste, they create fun, functional and upcycled products that find a new life with consumers and create social awareness about the effects of trash.

Our students along with the parents took part into the exhibition process with lot of enthusiasm. With the collaborating support of the parents,the head of school and under the guidance of the mentors the students were able to film a short move called “Tomorrow Land” where they went into the future to show how life would be if without any nature around us.

Various areas of curriculum were also covered during the whole exhibition preparation like Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Health and nutrition.

The students also got the opportunity to interview Mr. Asrul one of the directors from another project that works to save the marine life, specifically the corals. The organization is known as Yayasan terumburupa, and consists of divers that collaborate and work to restore the corals and help them grow. The best part is that we can also adopt a coral and contribute our little in saving Mother Earth.

The students had fun creating different games for the visitors, making posters, putting up all the display, making different models of sea creatures, filming the movie and learnt a lot during the field trips and interviews as well.

Year 6 – Exhibition: An International Perspective

As part of the Global Jaya School Year 6 PYP Exhibition, our students had the opportunity to connect with other schools around the world to discuss the progress, implementation and reflection of their experiences.

Over the course of the two-day event, students held video Skype calls with schools in New Zealand, Indonesia, Germany and Norway. They had the chance to share their thoughts about their exhibition experiences and ask questions of each other to gain a deeper mutual understanding of similarities and differences between how people from around the globe engage in the PYP exhibition.

Student Experience:

Renatta, Dhira and I Skyped with a school from New Zealand and we became their tour guides. We took them on a tour around the theater foyer to see all of our booths. We stopped at our booths and explained our issue, solution, and other things on our display. They asked us questions and we answered them. It was a really fun experience. I was very lucky to have the chance to be able to call schools from other countries.

I was very lucky to be able to call schools from other countries/places. My favourite calls were with the New Zealand and Norway schools because they made us laugh. We were also able to give them a tour of the theatre foyer, and allow them to interview other students. They asked great questions, and made Kiara, Dhira and I laugh.

It was like talking to us in the past when we Skyped with IB schools in Germany and Norway because they are just starting their exhibition process and we were just done. It was helpful for them to get tips and answers from us because we are finished with exhibition and we have experienced all the work.

Learning from individuals working in institutions promoting human rights

As our grade 5 students prepare for their PYP Exhibition in April 2017, they have had a lot of interactions and discussions with first-hand sources for the different issues they are inquiring on. The grade 5 teachers worked hard to try to get individuals, who are experts in their fields, to share their knowledge and experience with our grade 5 students.

For this year’s PYP Exhibition, the students chose the transdisciplinary theme ‘How We Organize Ourselves’ with the central idea “Social equality can determine how people act and how institutions govern.” Instead of all the 30 human rights, we will focus on freedom from discrimination, slavery, torture and degrading treatment; right to free movement, protection in another country, and right to a nationality and freedom to change it; freedom of thought, conscience and religion, and freedom of opinion and information; right to peaceful assembly and association, right to participate in government and elections; and right to desirable work and join trade unions, right to rest and leisure, right to adequate living standards.

On February 20, we were very privileged to have Indonesia’s Minister of Industry, Bapak Airlangga Hartanto, as our guest speaker. He first explained his roles as a Minister of Industry to the students. He mentioned that he works closely with Indonesian President Jokowi and other ministers for the betterment of Indonesia. He showed a video on how a big factory in Indonesia operates. After that, he enumerated the rights of workers such as minimum wage, working hours and overtime pay, medical benefits, pension fund and participation in labour unions. The students asked a lot of questions which the Minister answered cheerfully. At the end of his talk, he encouraged the students to study and work hard so that they can also help their country in the future.

On February 23, we had a Skype session with our guest speaker, Grace Villanueva, a lawyer from the Philippines. She had worked for 10 years in a non-governmental organization called Legal Rights and Natural Resources Center or LRC, whose focus is rights to natural resources of indigenous peoples and other upland poor rural communities.  Prior to joining LRC, she trained in a law firm after she took the bar exams.  Most recently, she was a consultant to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources of the Philippines.  In her presentation to our grade 5 students, she explained who the indigenous people are and how institutions protect their rights to their lands and territories. She also shared with the students how lawyers like her educate the indigenous people about their right to be asked for their permission and their right to develop based on their own dreams. The students had a lot of questions after her presentation. One student even asked, “Why don’t the indigenous people just change their ways so they won’t be discriminated?” in which Atty. Grace replied, “There is a saying: “Why fix something if it is not broken? All they want is a happy, just, peaceful, beautiful world enjoyed by every child, woman, man, which they will pass on to their future children for them to also enjoy and take care of for future generations.”

On February 28, three staff from Indonesia’s Komisi Pemilihan Umum (KPU), Ibu Lidya, Ibu Ina and Ibu Rika, went to our school and talked about the citizens’ right to choose their leader. They explained to the students the process of voting as well as the requirements for an individual to exercise his or her right to vote. Once again, our students took this opportunity to ask many questions like “Why can’t children vote?”, “How does your institution ensure a fair election?”, “What preparations do you do before an election?”, etc.

On February 3, one of our Humanities teachers from the Middle Years Programme, Michael Athens, shared his knowledge and experience with our students. He explained to them who refugees are, why they leave their country and what their rights are. He shared his own experience about interacting with them when he worked in one of the local libraries in Minneapolis many years ago. He gave facts and figures about crimes committed which did not include any refugees’ involvement at all. The session touched the hearts of the students and made them more compassionate to people who are in need. It also made them appreciate the things that they have which they normally take for granted.

On March 6, we were fortunate to have been given the chance to meet refugees from Pakistan and Sri Lanka by members of a Catholic organization in Bogor called Jesuit Refugees Service (JRS). Their mission is to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees. Their main areas of work are in the field of education, emergency assistance, healthcare, livelihood activities and social services. The first activity we had was to socialize with them in our school’s playground. Most of our girls had a chat with two teenage girls from Pakistan while the boys played. We went up to our assembly area after that and all our guests introduced themselves by saying their names and which country they come from. Our students invited them in their classrooms and they shared what they usually do in the class. One girl from Pakistan said that she loves art so our students gave her a lot of art materials to draw and paint. A boy from Pakistan said he likes playing soccer so our students played soccer with him. Our students were very sensitive and did not ask about their life as a refugee. Even for a day, our grade 5 students surely brought joy to these people.

With all these interactions and discussions, our young students were able to understand not only how they should be treated but how they should treat others as well. They realize that there are actually many individuals, institutions and organizations that protect the rights of human beings. Our guest speakers created a safe place for our students to explore, discuss, challenge and form their own opinions and values. The knowledge and respect of rights that our students have gained from all these past sessions (and more to come) have empowered them to tackle discrimination or inequality and improve their relationships with the society.

Preparing for and celebrating the PYP Exhibition

Planning for our school’s PYP Exhibition last academic year started as early as October 2015, when all the Grade 5 class teachers met to discuss the immersion programme which will be one of the learning journeys of the students for the PYP Exhibition under the transdisciplinary theme “How we express ourselves”. Below is a timeline and descriptions of our journey with the students from planning to celebrating success:

October 2015

The class teachers met every week and discussed the transdisciplinary theme for the PYP Exhibition as well as the objectives of the in-school and Bali immersions. Rich with arts and culture, they believe that Bali will offer great opportunities for students to gain deeper understanding of the ways people discover and express their ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values through arts. The students will be able to experience it, instead of just reading about it. Moreover, interacting with the locals will help our students extend their creativity and appreciate the aesthetic. While these programmes take a great deal of work and energy, the class teachers believe that broadening the horizons of the students will be worth it.

November 2015

Parents were invited to a Parent-Information Session on Bali Exploration.  The objectives of the programme were shared as well as the learning engagements that are crucial for the students’ exhibition journey. Parents’ feedback and suggestions were taken into consideration, and revisions were made in the programmes.

January 2016

The teachers started meeting all of the grade 5 students every Thursday to discuss the PYP Exhibition; the transdisciplinary theme, “How we express ourselves”; the central idea; lines of inquiry; key concepts; and approaches to learning. A video of the last school year’s PYP Exhibition was shown for the students to have an idea of how it is done. Before each session, the students were encouraged to write down their questions on their journal and ask them during the meetings. The roles and responsibilities of the students were also enumerated and explained.

The students also worked in groups and showed their understanding of “How we express ourselves” in the form of mind maps or any type of graphic organizers. After several art forms were identified, the children chose an art form that is the most interesting for them. Second options were also written down in case a group is too big.  The teachers then grouped the students accordingly and eventually had four groups with five to six members each. Each group came up with their “Group Essential Agreements”.

It was also during this month that teachers announced the guidelines and criteria for PYP Exhibition t-shirt and invitation design competitions. Most of the students were eager to join the competitions. Class teachers and single-subject teachers regularly met to delineate roles and responsibilities.

February 2016

Grade 5 parents were invited for an information session on the PYP Exhibition where their roles and responsibilities were discussed. During the session, former grade 5 parents shared their experiences as mentors for our previous PYP exhibitions.

Final preparations were also being made for the In-school and Bali immersion programmes. The supervisors in charge of both programmes met regularly to make sure that everything was in order.

The Grade 6 students were also invited to share their experiences during their PYP Exhibition. They also answered the Grade 5 students’ questions. They showed how they did their blogs and gave advice on how the groups can maximize their time and ensure a fair share of roles and responsibilities. It was also during this month that the winners for the t-shirt and invitation design competitions were announced.                                       

The students also brainstormed ideas, views and opinions on their chosen issue. They came up with mind maps and listed the things “that matter to them”. They also came up with questions and “wonderings”.  These and the school’s PYP coordinator’s session with the students helped them in formulating their central ideas and lines of inquiry. Our PYP coordinator explained each key concept to the students, and they identified the key concept for each of their lines of inquiry. The students were also taught how to fill in the PYP planner. The group members discussed how they were going to gather resources and information. They started to identify the people they can interview who are experts on their chosen issue. They planned which places they can visit in order to gather data for their research.

March 2016

To guide them in their research work, the students had a session on academic honesty with the school’s head librarian where they learnt what academic dishonesty means as well as examples of academic dishonesty. They also realized that it is very important to properly acknowledge their sources instead of merely copying others’ work. Our head Librarian taught them the MLA citation style using the application Citefast. The students did great at acknowledging their sources in all their research work.

In the previous years, the students would present their information through posters, brochures and other hard copies. For 2015 – 2016, the students did something different. They created blogs which contained their research, reflections, photos, interviews, etc. The change was done to minimize paper wastage and to maximize students’ time, as in the past they had spent so much time just decorating their booths. And so this month, the students had sessions on how to create blogs.  All the groups used the blog application “Weebly”. It took some time for the students to get the hang of using the blog, but in the end they yielded exceptional results. The students’ blogs are listed below:

April 2016

Parent-mentoring started this month. Every Thursday, one to two parents from each group came to mentor the students. Guidelines were given to parents so that they could better facilitate the mentoring sessions. Parents asked the students questions and gave suggestions on how they can gather resources, maximize their learning and improve their blogs. At the end of each session, they reported to the teachers and also gave feedback and suggestions. Forms were also given for them to fill in.

The assessment rubric was introduced and explained to the children. The groups met and discussed how they are going to achieve each criterion. The teachers regularly met with each group and discussed any issues or problems they were facing and how they could solve them. The teachers also gave a lot of prompts to guide the students in their research and action plan. Every end of the week, the class would gather and report on what they have achieved.  The class also reflected on the attributes of the learner profile, the PYP attitudes and the approaches to learning that were demonstrated during the week. Each student listened intently, and they learned a lot from these sharing and reflection sessions.

The students worked very hard to research and gather information. Some of the groups met on weekends to interview experts on their issues.  Weekly reflections were done, too. The students were careful in acknowledging their sources, and they made sure that everything was being cited, including photos or images.

There were also guest speakers invited to share their knowledge and expertise with the students. They conducted very meaningful and worthwhile sessions with the students who did not run out of questions to ask.

May 2016

The students were very busy during this last month of preparations for their PYP Exhibition. Their blogs had been constantly revised and updated. Teacher mentors started coming to ensure that the students are ready for the BIG day.   At this time, the rehearsals for the stage performance had been in full blast. Students and teachers practiced at least twice a week. The groups had also started presenting to other groups and everyone gave constructive criticisms to improve their work. The students were also on their final stage of completing their PYP Exhibition planner and reflections.

June 2016

June 1 and 2 were two very exciting and memorable days for the Grade 5 students as the culmination of their PYP journey finally arrived. On the first day, the Grade 5 students and teachers invited the students and teachers from Grades 1 to 4.  On the second day, parents and guests from other schools arrived. It was a day full of achievements, and the students felt very proud of what they have learnt and accomplished throughout their Exhibition journey. This year, we will continue with the practices we deemed went well last year, and make changes and adjustments for improvements.

Sekolah Mutiara Harapan’s 7th PYP Exhibition

As they say 7 is a lucky number. Indeed, it is for Mutiara Harapan because we survived the seventh PYP Exhibition that was held last January 25, 2017. The program started with the booth exhibition held in the classroom. The students from the different grade levels took turns in visiting the booths; they were amazed and inspired by the works of their seniors. Several junior high school students also dropped by and left with their interests increased.

In the evening, the formal PYP exhibition program was held with the attendance of the parents who were quite happy and proud of their children’s achievement and development. Each group presented their studies, and they also entertained the audience with song and dance numbers. They also showed a drama series that incorporated the central ideas of all three groups.

The grade 6 students started the organizing of the exhibition in the middle of July 2016; they decided on the transdisciplinary theme “How We Organize Ourselves” with the central idea “Globalization has various effects in our lives.” They formed three groups and endeavored to find existing problems that mattered to them. The first group chose cyberbullying, the second group agreed on game addiction and the third group looked into online shopping. Each group formulated their own central idea and lines of inquiry for their area of study.

The cyberbullying group’s central idea was “globalization affects worldwide communication.” This had the following lines of inquiry: (1) how communication changes over time, (2) responsible use of modern ways of communication, (3) cases of cyberbullying, and (4) causes and effects of cyberbullying.

Game addiction group’s central idea was “technology changes the way people play.” These were their lines of inquiry: (1) the evolution of games, (2) reasons why people play online games, and (3) the effects of game addiction people’s lives.

Online shopping focused on this central idea: Technology affects the way products reach consumers. The lines of inquiry were the following: (1) how online shopping differs from common shopping, (2) the reasons people choose online shopping, (3) advantages and disadvantages of online shopping, and (4) problems caused by online shopping and its cases.

There were several actions taken initiated by students during their journey in PYP:

Cyberbullying Group. They conducted a room-to-room campaign on the group blog, and they also started an anti-cyberbullying report box. The report box was placed in a strategic area in school wherein students could report cyberbullying cases anonymously. The group drafted a proposal on the solution and intervention of cyberbullying cases, including the consequences, to be included in the students’ handbook since our current student’s handbook does not include cyberbullying cases.

Game Addiction Group. Parents were invited for an awareness talk on how to prevent children from spending too much time on online games. One of our doctors in the company clinic, Dr. Imelda, explained the possible sickness that can be acquired from playing too many online games. Our guidance counselor, Ms. Marissa, explained the adverse effects on the gamer’s behavior.

Online Shopping Group. Brochures about online shopping were distributed to parents; it included information on how to avoid online scam/fraud. The content of the brochure was the result of the researches taken from different sources.  It included the following: the definition of online shopping, possible problems to be encountered while doing online shopping, and smart tips for online shopping.

The PYP exhibition was a work of a lifetime for these students, and they have learned so many things through this experience. Cyberbullying Group learned the importance of cooperation, sense of responsibility, patience, and having the right attitude. Online Shopping Group realized the value of leadership, organization, commitment, and open-mindedness. Game Addiction Group reflected on the importance of improving oneself by helping teammates in order to achieve the group’s goals.

We are all happy that the seventh PYP Exhibition has been a success. It’s far from perfect, but it’s been getting better year after year. With this, we are excited for the next.

Second Time Around– A PYP Exhibition Journey

Thus, it is3 this time of year again! Last month our daring fifth graders started their venture into the exciting journey that is the PYP Exhibition. As this is the second year we are doing the exhibition, I find myself on familiar ground as the team addressed last year’s concerns from the different elements of the project — the kids, t
heir mentors, roles of parents, school facilities, etc.

For this year, we have decided to focus our theme on ‘Sharing the Planet’. The team conducted a comprehensive unlocking and thorough brainstorming of the central idea, the aim of which is to make sure that the theme is maximized and the kids are provided with a lot of options for their topics.

Upon finalization of the topics by each PYP Exhibition Group, the real work begins. I remember embarking on this last year. I likened the experience to that of a blind man finding his way thru a maze, with people guiding him with directions. As the exhibition is self-implementing by design, it is a struggle for me to simply let the kids go and let the process of inquiry take its course. As a tenured teacher, it was a ten2dency of mine to micro-manage things too much. Teachers have to relegate themselves to a “witnessing” or mentoring role. After all, the ideals, issues and direction of inquiry the kids want to pursue must remain in the forefront.

Finding Out — Living Out

As the students went on their trips to the different places of interest, an immediate change has occurred among them. From the usual attitude of students trudging their way through their assigned task from school, they have taken upon themselves the initiative to look for places/people they believe are essential to their chosen lines of inquiry. As their passion for their chosen topics develops, other aspects of their character seems to align themselves. Students have taken the responsibility to remind each other of mentor meetings and designated tasks. In the pursuit of acquiring more knowledge, school life has elevated itself from the mere accomplishment of tasks, to a sort of lifestyle worth adhering to.

Abolishing Apathy

image02‘Sharing the Planet’ is a very selfless theme as it widens the awareness of the students to the things around them, as well as their involvement in maintaining its balance. One of my groups in particular decided to get involved with abandoned animals and those who were victims of animal cruelty. Their visits to animal shelters have been so moving that eliciting a response action from them was natural, sincere, and meaningful. Another group found themselves appalled by the huge amount of pollution in our water system. A third group got involved with people who live by the principle of conserving energy in their homes. This exposure has eventually led to the “what if” questions which manifests itself in genuine and even sustained action.

Our Roles

A great mentor once said, “Children nowadays do not need teachers anymore. They need 4witnesses”. Working on the PYP Exhibition provides truth to this. From prior knowledge to taking action, nothing beats experiential mentoring and learning. I guess as mentors, educators, and parents, we find ourselves as the extension of our students. Like the driver to his vehicle, we become the machinery to aid the students in the journey to their destination. We become the conduit to their visions and aspirations. As this leads them to becoming holistic learners, I don’t consider it a demotion, hehe.

We adapt, adjust, and enrich. Such is the call to educate. Such is the call to serve.

The PYP Exhibition

Four years of teaching the PYP curriculum and attending an IB Exhibition workshop was not enough preparation for what was in store during the PYP Exhibition. The greatest challenge was leaving the students to their own inquiry with only minimal supervision. Not to mention that, in the beginning, personalities clashed within groups. I was almost sure our first exhibition would be a complete disaster.

However one thing I have learned in 12 years of teaching is that there is something new going on each day. Surprises are right around the corner. As the inquiry got underway, the students became more and more engaged in their learning and would often share new discoveries with one another and with their teachers.  

For our first year, the theme was HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES and the central idea was “Self-expression bridges cultural diversity and celebrates individuality.” Teachers anticipated that students would come up with singing, dancing and theater arts as their topics. But like I said, there is something new to learn every day. We were pleasantly surprised by the topics the students came up with. They ranged from cooking and pottery to sports and social media. This wide spectrum provided such a big pool of information that made inquiry so much richer and more interesting for the students.

Our grade 5 students were out all over Jakarta. They were out interviewing experts and celebrities. They were learning how to cook, paint, make batik and do pottery. They became actively involved in sports as well as playing traditional Indonesian games with their friends and creating computer games. Some groups came up with campaigns on how to use social media responsibly. Another group came up with the slogan “love yourself” to remind people to be themselves.

As I watched this exhibition unfold and as I witnessed my students step out of their comfort zones, I am reminded of my favorite Chinese proverb, “The flower that blooms in adversity is rarest and most beautiful of all”.  Indeed, it was a difficult time. Some of them would fall ill along the way. Buckets of tears were shed. Yet many of them blossomed quite magnificently and unexpectedly. As Exhibition Day approached, I was confident that these grade 5 students would be able to share the journey of their inquiry to anyone who cared to listen. I am even more confident that this is only the beginning of the many obstacles they will encounter and ultimately conquer.
