Leadership in the PYP

Posted on

The recently published enhancements to the Primary Years Programme have re-emphasized the importance of student leadership. Providing voice, choice and ownership within the classroom and school community allow students to engage in the learning process and influence its direction and focus.

One of the ways Global Jaya has chosen to emphasize voice, choice and ownership is through the encouragement of leadership roles and the introduction of new opportunities.

Some of the roles available to students this year include:
* Student Council * House Captains and Vice Captains * Information and Communication Technology Leaders * Mini Inquiry Group (MIG) Leaders * Environment Committee * Assembly Organisation Supervisors * Field Trip/Camp/Study Tour Leaders

To assist students in their leadership roles, training sessions have been arranged to support the development of specific skills and learner profile attributes. The sessions have also identified links to the IB leadership capabilities as seen through the descriptions below.

Strategic capability

Forward-thinking, see ‘the bigger picture’ and translate strategy into action.

Cultural capability

Interact with people and ideas from different cultural traditions, respect and celebrate cultural diversity and see it as essential for intercultural learning.

Pedagogical capability

Support the need to build individual and school knowledge and understanding.

Entrepreneurial capability

Anticipate change and respond in creative, analytical and practical ways and demonstrate the

ability to innovate, develop, communicate, promote and evaluate new ideas and practices.

Relational capability

Encourage individuals and groups to work together to achieve a goal or set of goals.

Reflective capability

Use thinking strategies when engaging with different experiences.

Heuristic intelligence (insight) capability

Evaluate situations and practices in order to  provide explanations and solutions, and make decisions.

Over the coming weeks, students will construct SMART goals to provide direction and support for their work this school year.

We wish all our students well as they embark on their leadership roles!
