Year 2 Learning Experiences

Posted on Updated on

Year 2 has been working on their first unit of inquiry involving community. To get a better understanding of the responsibilities of different community members and how they work together and support each other, the students participated in two engaging learning experiences.

Field Trip to Kidzania

Everyone headed off to Kidzania with lots of excitement for what the day would hold. In small groups, students selected different community areas and responsibilities to explore. Some became police officers; others were water research experts. We learned how to make doughnuts, noodles and towels. We were pilots flying airplanes, scientists in a lab, and window washers keeping our city clean. We learned that everyone plays a different role in our community, but we all share the same responsibility to work together and support each other.

Training Day

In order to better get to know how our school community runs, students engaged in a Training Day where they shadowed a school community member. By observing, interviewing and learning from different people who work at our school, such as canteen staff, the librarian and gardeners, we were able to get a more solid understanding of their roles, rights and responsibilities. Students have shown an increased appreciation for everyone’s role in keeping our school community happy and running smoothly.

Year 5 Travel to Dufan

The Year 5 students went to Dufan as part of the introduction into ‘How the World Works’, a unit about how scientific forces help us solve and create problems. We explored by riding roller coasters and making connections to how scientific forces and simple machines made the ride possible.

During the trip, we learned how scientific forces work with roller coasters and how the kinetic energy and potential energy work together.  We learned how friction makes the wheels of the roller coaster move and when gravity pulls the coaster down it accelerates. We also observed that when a roller coaster climbs up the track it is called inertia, but when it is at the top gravity and momentum pulls it down.

We observed the key concept of causation during the wire/rope causes the roller coaster to climb than the gravity causes the roller coaster to go down. We also recognized the key concept of function when potential energy changed to kinetic energy is what drives the roller coaster.

During the field trip we showed we are thinkers because we think what kind of simple machine is in active on the rides. We showed we were good communicators because when we were on the rides we had to communicate to friends what would be the force of the ride we are riding. Finally, we were caring when our friends didn’t want to go on the extreme ride, we showed empathy for their fear.

The learner profile attributes we demonstrated were Confidence because when the ride was extreme rides,we still trusted ourselves that we could handle it.

We showed Independence because when our friends were too afraid to ride the extreme rides, they didn’t stop us from riding.

By the end of the trip, we learned how the roller coasters works with the forces of science. We also showed learner attributes, learner attitudes, and key concepts related. We also learned various kinds of simple machines and how they work together and how simple machines work with the forces. This field trip was good because it allowed us to explore and have fun at the same time!
